The Resistance Of The Unmarried Young Generation To The Fading Of Cultural Values In The Final Ritual Of Appreciation To Parents Among The Simalungun Community
Abstract
Sociocultural changes due to globalization have had a significant impact on the sustainability of local cultural values, including in the Simalungun community. One form of culture that has been challenged is the ritual of paying final respects to parents, mambere namalum, tungkot, and pakon duda-duda. These rituals have symbolic meanings of respect, responsibility, and kinship ties within the pentagonal social structure in Simalungun. This study aims to analyze the forms of resistance among unmarried youth against the fading cultural values in the implementation of these rituals, as well as the underlying factors in the East Siantar District, Pematangsiantar City. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, where data is collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants consist of administrators of the Simalungun intellectual institution (Partuha Maujana Simalungun [PMS]), families who have performed the rituals, and unmarried youth. Data analysis was conducted using James C. Scott's theory of resistance, which distinguishes between overt and covert resistance. The research findings indicate that resistance from unmarried youth manifests itself in subtle forms of rejection and reduced participation. This resistance is influenced by changing mindsets and modern education. This research contributes to the preservation of Simalungun culture and provides considerations for traditional institutions and the government in formulating strategies to pass on cultural heritage to the younger generation.
